Recommendation: If you are interested in the 1978 Honda GL1000 Goldwing with 1975-1977 rear shocks, I recommend having a qualified mechanic inspect the bike thoroughly before purchasing it. This will help you identify any potential issues and ensure that the bike is in good working order. Additionally, I recommend budgeting for maintenance and repairs, as they are likely to be more frequent with an older bike. Overall, the GL1000 is a classic motorcycle that can be a great addition to any collection or a reliable touring bike for weekend rides.

Details:

To bad there is this gouge on the face of the lower mount. I used a spring compressor to take them apart just to make sure the shock tube was OK. Really good dampening both directions. Hard to find good 78, 79 shocks as they have a tendency to leak.

Pretty shiny. Great shock tube and piston. I took the time to really give them a good cleaning.

No rust, not even on the springs. Will also fit 75, 76, and 77 but not period correct. Original shock for 78 and 79 Honda gold wing gl as there isn't enough internal support for the shock and piston shocks wear better. There is a rub mark on the rear of the inner shock tube in the middle, under the double spring connector.

The split spring allows the shock to bend when extended causing excessive wear on the piston and seals. Pictures tell the tale. Cannot be seen when shock is mounted.
